ICCAIA Statement on New COVID-19 Omicron Variant

Montreal 3 December, 2021. ICCAIA’s Chairman, Jan Pie, today made a statement following the recent emergence of the COVID-19 Omicron variant.

“In the past days, we have seen an increasing number of Governments responding to the new coronavirus variant by imposing travel bans and inconsistent measures. In line with ICAO and WHO recommendations, we must use an evidence-based approach to dealing with the variant, drawing on the experience of the last two years and the extensive guidance developed by ICAO and adopted by the Ministerial High-Level Conference on COVID-19. We must also take a coordinated approach to the expiration of health credentials and requirements for booster vaccines in line with WHO advice, as part of a multi-layered risk management strategy to ensure the continuity of air travel.”

ICCAIA welcomes the bulletin released by ICAO, highlighting the recommendations and guidance contained in the ICAO Council Aviation Recovery Task Force’s (CART) Take-off Guidance for Air Travel through the COVID-19 Public Health Crisis, in addition to the third edition of ICAO’s Manual on COVID-19 Cross-Border Risk Management.
