ICCAIA Participates in the IACAC Finance Workshop

Montréal, 6 June 2025 – Dan Carnelly (Executive Vice President) and Anouck Barreaux (Director of Environment, Security, Health and Facilitation Policy) represented ICCAIA at the International Aviation Climate Ambition Coalition (IACAC) Finance Workshop, a key event focused on advancing financial strategies to support aviation decarbonization.

The workshop, attended by global stakeholders, featured three focused sessions:

  • Part 1: Progress Since A41
Stakeholders, including States and organizations, shared updates on developments since the 41st ICAO Assembly, highlighting new initiatives such as FINVEST – a collaborative financing platform.
  • Part 2: Finance Deep Dive: What Works?
This session explored effective financing mechanisms supporting decarbonization, including Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and emerging green technologies.
  • Part 3: The Coalition to the Assembly and Beyond
An interactive breakout aimed at aligning financing priorities ahead of the 42nd ICAO Assembly and shaping a collective plan of action.

A highlight of the day was hearing from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) about their partnership with the International Civil Aviaiton Organization (ICAO) on the FINVEST Hub. The industry is optimistic about tangible progress on this initiative at the upcoming ICAO Assembly, recognizing its role as a critical enabler for scaling SAF.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) also emphasized the scale of investment required to meet the Long Term Aspirational Goal (LTAG) of net-zero emissions by 2050. Including capital expenditure on refineries, investment needs are estimated at $8.5 to $13 trillion—a clear call to action for mobilizing sustainable finance.

ICCAIA underscored the importance of keeping funds within the aviation ecosystem to ensure progress on decarbonization. The organization reiterated that economic measures diverting resources from the sector—such as external levies—could undermine global efforts to reach net zero.

These discussions laid a strong foundation for continued cooperation and reinforced the Coalition’s commitment to capacity building and collaboration.

ICCAIA looks forward to the next steps on the road to a more sustainable future in aviation.
